Rochelle Gerratt has always jumped in and done what is required and done well in so very many experiences. I’ve always been in awe of her courage and self-confidence. What I do recall about the start to the Good Tern, which is in gratitude to Rochelle...
There was the Camden co-op which may still exist(?). Also, Foghorn co-op in Tenants Harbor was in existence for many years already, thanks to John Bly and Hartley Spencer. Craig Wilgus and Hartley would drive to Boston each month to pick up what co-op members signed up for. There was one health food store in Camden that lasted for a short time. . . I loved that store. I used that when I lived in Camden in the early 70’s.
I was visiting with Rochelle in Camden when she was living on Washington Street. Paul Chartrand came over—they were very good friends. She started asking him questions about how to go about creating a storefront health food store. Paul explained that first step, which was to draw up a questionnaire to find out if there’s a need and desire for this. So, she dug in and moved forward, undaunted. From there things began to move swiftly, and many wonderful, dedicated individuals got involved and made it a reality.
Rochelle Gerratt as the first manager had a lot to deal with, which was all new to her and, I imagine, a huge burden. Susy Ellis was the best store manager we ever had when we were in the South End location. I was sorry when she decided to end her role. She deserves great thanks!!! Patti Luchetti was a wonderful manager, also.
Thank you to all those dedicated individuals who manifested this fine store.
