Rockland — On Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m., Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St., will present a Transition Town screening and panel discussion of the film “The Economics of Happiness” in the Friends Community Room.
The Transition Movement is comprised of vibrant, grassroots community initiatives that seek to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis. “The Economics of Happiness” describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. For the majority of people on the planet, economic globalization has led to deepening challenges of fundamentalism and ethnic conflict, climate chaos and species extinction, financial instability and unemployment. At the same time, all around the world, people are starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm — an economics of localization.
The evening is cosponsored by the library and Good Tern Natural Foods Co-Op. Special accommodations for persons with disabilities can be made with 48 hours notice by calling the library at 594-0310. This is part of a continuing series of literary, film and cultural offerings sponsored by the library and Friends of the Rockland Public Library.
